Question & Answers

Q. How long will it take to add Smart Locks hair extensions to my own hair?

A - This will depend on the look you are going for and consequently how many

extensions it will take to achieve that look. On average a thickening process could

take 2-3 hours and a lengthening process 4-5 hrs. I will fully advice you of

timings and costs when you have your initial consultation.

Q. What are Smart Locks?

A - Smart Locks are small round copper tubes that are slid up the hair and the

extension tip placed inside an clamped down tight until removed without the

use of any heat, glue or damage to the natural hair.

Q. Will people be able to tell that I’m wearing extensions?

A - Hair extensions will look totally natural and no one need ever know

except you and perhaps that special someone who is allowed to run their

hands through your hair.

Q. How long does my hair have to be to have hair extensions?

A - 4-5 inches at the nape of neck to ensure a natural blend.

Q. How much will it cost?

A - Please visit the Price page

Q. Will my hair look natural?

A - All my extensions are colour matched to each individual clients hair colour. Once the hair is fitted I blend all of our hair in front for a truly natural effect, I take great care to blend in each and every clients hair so that the colour looks as natural as the clients hair. No one will know you are wearing hair extensions.

Q – Will Extensions damage my hair?

A - This is a commonly asked question. When extensions are applied properly there is virtually no reason why they would damage your hair, and to this end thousands of women have used extensions to grow their own hair to a desired length with no adverse effects whatsoever. However, that is not to say everybody's hair is suitable for extensions. I take the safety of your hair very seriously and take every reasonable precaution to ascertain the suitability of your hair before commencing with the extensions. Everybody experiences normal hair shedding, don't worry, this is entirely natural. You will notice on your hairbrush, whether you wear extensions or not, that you shed between 70 to 100 hairs a day - adding up to around 3,000 hairs a month or 36,000 a year. It seems a lot but on average we have at least 100,000 to 150,000 hairs on our heads alone, so this rate of growth and renewal is entirely normal.

Q - How long will my extensions last for?

A - Depending on which origin of hair you choose depends on the life of the hair. The Indian hair can last up to 6 months. The Russian hair can last up to 9-12 months. This also depends on the aftercare; if you use a lot of heat on the hair then this decreases the life.

Q. What appointments do I need after I have had my hair extensions fitted?

A - It is recommended to have your hair extensions refitted every 8-10 weeks due the natural hair growth. This is removing each Smart Lock one by one and replacing back to the roots again using the same hair and new Smart Locks every time leaving them feeling fresh again.

Q. Can I wear my hair up whilst wearing hair extensions?

A - Yes you can. You can style your hair as you normally would with your own hair. Be creative with your new longer hair and try something different to create a lovely hair style.

Q - Can I just add highlights?

A - Yes. This is a very effective way of enjoying extensions and you can choose instant colour that your hairdresser might otherwise feel would be too damaging to chemically apply to your own hair. With extensions no harmful dyes or solutions are used and you can either opt for subtle highlights and lowlights or even bold neon's, reds, blacks, blues, yellows, pinks, and greens - whatever you want, really. Hair extensions are a great way of achieving a bold new or natural colour

Q - Should I give my hair a rest between extensions?

A - There is no need if they are properly applied and removed, so your own hair remains undamaged. Most people prefer to have their extensions removed and replaced on the same day, so their hair continues looking as good as ever.

Q - Can I bath, shower, swim, go out in the wind and rain, and play sport in my new extensions?

A - Your hair extensions should only get wet when being washed in the shower. Going swimming with the seawater and chlorine may cause damage the hair by drying the hair and causing the hair to discolour. Please put your hair up and avoid getting the wet.

It is best to only wash your hair in the shower and not in the bath. You can certainly be out in the wind and rain whilst wearing your hair extensions, please brush and dry where needed. Exercising is completely fine, however if you get hot and sweaty please wash and dry your hair after.

Q - What about sun and salt-water damage?

A - Whilst in the sun please cover your hair extensions as the sun can cause discolouration to the extensions including sea salt water.

Q - What happens if I don't like my new extensions?

A - This very rarely happens, but if you are unhappy it is strongly advisable you let me know as soon as possible and we can arrange the removal of your hair extensions without damage or residue, leaving your hair just as it was when you started.

Q - What happens when extensions are removed and can I do it myself?

A - The removal of your Smart Locks hair extensions are removed safely and efficiently without any damage by unclamping the Smart Locks releasing the extension and your own hair will be as it was before but longer hopefully. A trained professional should only do the removal of your hair extensions as it can be done without any damage to the natural hair.

Q - Won't all those extensions be too heavy for my own hair underneath?

A - If they are applied correctly there should be no problem whatsoever. A good technician will balance the weight perfectly, taking a section of your hair and adding an extension of equal weight, resulting in a completely balanced natural look. It is surprising how quickly you get used to having a gloriously full head of hair.

Q. Will my scalp still be able to breathe naturally with extensions?

A - Smart Locks hair extensions are fitted close to the hair roots and scalp but will allow enough space for movement so you will be able to feel and touch your scalp as normal.

Q. Do I need to buy expensive shampoos and conditioners?

A - It is recommended to use products that specially designed for hair extensions without the harsh chemicals. Smart Hair Extensions offer special products that are suitable for the hair to keep them moisturised and looking their best.

Q. Can I use a hairdryer, hot rollers and other styling equipment?

A - Yes, you can use all of the above with real hair however it is essential to use heat protector to protect the hair and your own hair from heat damage. The more heat on the hair extensions the likely the life of the extensions with decrease.

Q. Is it safe to leave my hair to dry naturally?

A - I recommend drying fully your hair every time you wash it as leaving them wet may cause the water to get in the Smart Lock and slip out.

Q - If I fancy a new hair colour, how will that match up with my extensions?

A - Any extension hair I use is perfectly matched in colour to your own. If your roots need doing before extensions are added, or you fancy a complete change of colour, I can colour your own head of hair ahead of any extensions work and order you new hair extensions.
